POST PAST EDIT
Madeleine Mans, RAvB Rotterdam

For 34 years already, the Inntel Hotel in Rotterdam has been in the making. An interesting case - especially in times where we should treat our buildings careful in order to not waste resources and destroy identity. This project examines the building as a growth model instead of a static end product: it provides a possible sequel for a story with an open end.

Post Past Edit started just as open as it ends: starting solely from a fascination for Rotterdam’s oldest city area - the Stadsdriehoek. Without a clear set location or program, the first phase of the research consisted of collecting, documenting and analysing the history of the area - resulting in an elaborate catalogue. Amidst all built, lost and re-built plans, the Inntel Hotel turns out to be an unexpected built representation of this layered and heterogenous city: its current shape is the result of dreams, demolitions and extensions from different periods. To underline the power of the modest quality of this building the project aims to add a meaningful layer to the sequence - to connect hidden and historical layers to current times, both in built structure and storyline.

History, now and future fade together by using elements from the past, bending them to present times, whilst planning for a new way of using and re-using buildings. In this project, a new layer focuses on connectivity. New additions like stairs, escalators, ramps or elevators liberate the building. Enabling flexible usage, buildings are able to grow older: maintaining a cities identity. Locked into the building adapting to its structural elements - the additions are moments where the introvert building becomes extravert: sometimes exposing the structure, sometimes the user. Like a layered city is rich in meaning and recognition, this approach amplifies a building’s role in its context. Connecting seen and unseen, history and city.
